Today’s new original painting is titled “Filtering Winds” which captures the view from an alfalfa farm in Grenada, which is located in the valley of Siskiyou County. Surrounding the various farms and ranches in valley are beautiful mountains, including the beautiful Mount Shasta.
Inspiration
My grandpa has been an alfalfa farmer in Grenada for over 60 years. He only retired about a year and a half ago at 92 years old. Growing up, my siblings and I would make a long car journey up i-5 to visit my grandparents and the rest of my dad’s side of the family. The farm holds many beautiful memories of Thanksgiving gatherings, adventures with cousins, farm chores, freshly bailed alfalfa, and the warm smell of beef ribs on the grill.
A couple years ago, I walked along the fields thick with rich green alfalfa and dressed in purple alfalfa flowers, knowing my grandpa was about to stop farming, and only this past summer I walked through them again knowing it was going to be sold.
I’ve dabbled with painting the area before which has been a challenge given the powerful mountains, dramatic clouds, and wide expansion of the valley. I thought I would come back to the subject again to capture the views of the place during the times it was being farmed.
An iconic feature to the area that locals can’t help but mention regularly are the strong winds that funnel through the valley. I wanted to capture the alfalfa and hay dancing around the strong swirling wind. At the end of the painting I titled the artwork “Filtering Winds”. You can’t see it in the painting, but hidden in the distance behind an overcast day is Mount Shasta. I am hoping to get a good painting of the mountain soon!
